Myth vs. Reality

Cowboys were often depicted as rough and tumble outlaws or heros in Hollywood films. This depiction is wrong- cowboys were cow herders, so they hardly had time to be outlaws or save damsels in distress. They were only really interested in making money. They rarely had shoot outs with sherifs in towns in reality. Hollywood turns these men with mundane jobs into something far greater than they actually were.

  1. So Haley, what movie did you watch? The cowboys that you described are in basically every western. I like your comment about "damsels in distress", the movie i watched had a lot to do with a damsel in distress and i really did not think of frasing it that way. So, i definitely agree with your insights about the fake cowboys and the real ones : ).

  2. i also did the like the "damsel in distress." In the movie i watched, this guy was stressed out over a girl and constantly leading his group of wagon settlers out west. But i do know that their was a lot of running away due to certain individuals who were in debt because of their gambling, like in the Big Trail.

  3. I couldn't agree with you more Haley. I guess Hollywood didn't find the real cowboy image entertaining, so they changed it into something epic. But way to get your point across :)

  4. lol, actually, I didn't have any time to watch a western, but I have watched them before, so I just decided to pick a few trends that I saw and compared them to the real thing.

  5. I agree Haley. I saw these things too when watching "Billy the Kid". Hollywood really exhagerated the glamour of the cowboys lives because a life thats consists of dirt, cows and never-ending tumble weeds would most definatly not be interesting to watch. You should read my blog ;) I also noticed how the outlawed cowboys in this movie banded together.. and i'm not so sure thats how it really was, I always imagined cowboys as leading lonely lives..
